Kampot day trip from Phnom Penh: is it worth it?

Updated 15 October 2026 · 7 min read

Yes, you can see Kampot in a day from Phnom Penh, but only just. Expect six to eight hours on the road for five to nine hours on the ground, depending on which buses you catch. That's enough for the half-day countryside loop: salt fields, a pepper farm, Secret Lake and a cave temple. With the first van down and the last bus back, it's even enough for a long Kampot and Kep day. If you can spare one night, though, we'd stay. Kampot is at its best in the late afternoon and evening, exactly when day-trippers have to leave.

The honest maths: road time against time in Kampot

Kampot is about 150 km south-west of Phnom Penh. In 2026, a minivan takes three to three and a half hours each way, the Giant Ibis bus about four, the train four or more, and a private car two and a half to three.

You may read that the expressway has made Kampot a quick hop from the capital. It hasn't. Cambodia's only open expressway runs from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, not Kampot. Traffic to Kampot mainly uses National Road 3, which was rebuilt in 2022, and three smaller roads nearby (the 41, 31 and 33) were upgraded and reopened in April 2025. The roads are decent, but there's no 90-minute shortcut. If a driver does use the expressway for part of the way, it's a toll road (roughly $0.08 per km, about $15 for the full length by car), so ask whether tolls are included.

These times are approximate. Holiday traffic and heavy rain slow the roads, and the train often runs half an hour to an hour late.

What fits in the hours you have

Five or six hours: the countryside loop

The classic Kampot half day takes four to five hours by tuk-tuk. It covers the salt fields, La Plantation pepper farm, Secret Lake next door and the 7th-century Phnom Chhngok cave temple. It fits a day trip well, with three things to watch:

Our countryside guide covers each stop in detail.

Eight or nine hours: Kampot and Kep

Kep is 25 km away, 35–45 minutes by tuk-tuk. A full Kampot and Kep day, with the countryside stops plus crab at Kep's market, usually takes seven to eight hours. That only fits with the first van down and the 19:00 bus back. It's a long day, but a good one. See Kep crab market for what to order and pay.

What doesn't fit

A sample day-trip timetable

Both versions start the same way. Take the 6:00 van: Kim Seng Express leaves the Olympic Market area about every half hour from 6:00, and it's worth booking the day before. You arrive by Kampot's Durian Roundabout around 9:30, in time for a coffee by the river.

Book your return seat in the morning. Vans run back to Phnom Penh until early evening, but last departures vary by company and season. Giant Ibis's 19:00 bus is the latest scheduled departure we could confirm.

Getting there and back

What a day trip costs (2026)

ItemRough cost
Van there and backAbout $12–20 per person
Private tuk-tuk, countryside half dayTypically ≈ $20–25 per tuk-tuk
Private tuk-tuk, Kampot and Kep full dayTypically ≈ $35–45 per tuk-tuk
La PlantationAbout $2.50 entry voucher
Phnom Chhngok cave templeAbout $1–2
Salt fields, Secret LakeFree
Crab lunch in KepAbout $20–30 for two

For two people sharing a tuk-tuk, a van-and-countryside day comes to roughly $30–40 each plus food, far less than a packaged tour. The tuk-tuk figures are typical private rates; your driver confirms the actual price. See Kampot tuk-tuk prices.

When to stay the night instead

A day trip makes sense if Phnom Penh is your base and you have one free day. We'd stay at least one night:

With one night, take a morning van and do the countryside loop in the afternoon, ending at the salt fields. Catch the river at sunset, then spend the next morning in Kep or on Bokor before an evening bus back. A late bus is fine, but avoid long private-car drives after dark: Cambodia has one of the highest road accident rates in South-East Asia. Our how many days in Kampot guide has longer itineraries.

Ride with Seth

Seth was born in Kampot and has guided visitors from his tuk-tuk for 12 years; he's rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor. He can do the countryside loop or a Kep loop from Kampot town, timed around your buses, and from October to March he can book your La Plantation slot. FAQ

Yes. An early van down and a late bus back give you five to nine hours in Kampot, enough for the countryside loop or a long Kampot and Kep day. You'll spend six to eight hours on the road.

How long is the drive from Phnom Penh to Kampot?

About two and a half to three hours by private car, three to three and a half by minivan, about four by Giant Ibis bus, and four or more by train.
